MANAGING RECALLS AND SLIPPAGES 3
Managing Recalls and Slippages
This paper provides a review of recall management, and how a manager can
prevent product recalls by leveraging the enormous knowledge accessible to firms both external
and internal dimensions of firms. This knowledge helps companies to leverage them to create
proper designs and manufacture products according to the developed designs. This ensures to
communicate the appropriate use of products to consumers. Besides, other shareholders such as
researchers, consumers and regulators play a significant part in enhancing product safety and
decreasing product recall. The paper provides steps that are important and how to manage
slippages within product production.
MANAGING RECALLS AND SLIPPAGES 4
This chapter review focuses on the management of recalls, before and after.
According to the author of the book, there is an increased production of toys made in China.
However, there is an increasing product recalls due to issues faced by China such as poor
working conditions on factories, lax industry regulations, corruption and burgeoning demand for
skills to meet the demand of Western markets. The production of toys products should be
designed and aligned according to the market needs, preferences and requirements. Lack of
organization systems for toy market has been the leading cause of increasing toy recalls in China.
This review provides the most critical recall fields, and the evaluation of the best sections that
can mitigate the increase toy recalls in China.
2.0. Important Areas
According to the Bapuji (2011), “there are six important stages of the toy
manufacturer which include toy design, prototype development, testing, manufacturing, quality
control, and distribution and sales.” The main reasons for increasing product recall are lack of
proper design and aligning manufacturing according to market demands. Although the increasing
recalls for toys, the number of units recalled has not increased as well as the driving force has
been even more dramatic in imports from China. The main reason for the vast majority is due to
small designs provided by the brand-owning companies to manufacturers. However,
manufacturing recalls also shows the same trend in recent years. There is also a lack of
organizational systems to deal with institutional differences between Asia and the West,
specifically China as well as failed in problem identification of toy recalls.
MANAGING RECALLS AND SLIPPAGES 5
According to Bapuji (2011), “design flaws are the primary cause of many toys
recalls.” However, further issues in the manufacturing phase can amount to several hazards due
to specific safety problems emerging from inaccurate assembling by users or insufficient product
instructions. Thus, in order to reduce the number of toy recalls, companies can develop various
strategies before the toy-production phase, during the manufacturing process and after the sale of
toys. Therefore, six processes provide the best process that can help companies to prevent
product recalls. The processes are essential in aligning toys to match the preferences of
consumers and reduce the incidents of recalls. It is essential that the pre-production procedures in
the value chain of toys ensure that the design given to manufacturers is sound, safe and error-
According to Bapuji (2011), the pre-production design is crucial because it deals
with activities such as the selection of toy design, development of the final prototype and testing
of the developed prototype. It is essential for this process to focus on developing products which
are exciting and safe designs. There are decreased awards for product designs showing reduced
attention to the development of the right product design. Bapuji (2011) believes the vast majority
of recalls are because of inadequate design. Thus, companies should effectively focus on
designing of safe toys to reduce the levels of product recalls. Design excellence and conducting
of due diligence on the product ensures proper identification of any design-related issues.
Besides, consumers must consider all possible ways to enhance the safety of using the product
and establish all hazards related to the product. For instance, Bapuji (2011) believes that
companies should factor in safety measures of product use as well as regulations and standards
that govern toy uses in order to avoid complication that leads to toy recalls. Also, a consumer-
focused design must take into account the use of the final product by aligning their uses or

preferences to the product design. Besides making fancy and safe products, product designers
should ensure that their products meet all voluntary and mandatory standards that govern the
product. However, designing safe products is challenging, and producers should most efficiently
consider safety issues at the design phase to reduce the possibilities of injuries and recalls.
The prototype development stage should ensure no missteps related to the
available time and competitive environment of toy manufacturing. This ensures excellent care
and high-quality materials are used to develop prototypes. The testing phase should ensure
adequate test in an actual-use situation, especially to target users. Managers should also follow
the directions given at designing and testing engineers to ensure that products are safe and align
with consumer requirements and measures. Companies should also ensure the provision of
adequate resources and time for developing and testing prototype. According to Bapuji (2011), it
is essential to monitor the value chain activities after the toy design is in the manufacturing stage.
Besides product safety, products should be manufactured according to the design
through close supervision and quality control. Producers should have good coordination between
design and manufacturer to meet the market standards and eliminate the possibility of using
unintended materials (Liu, Shankar & Yun, 2017). Proper coordination between design and
manufacturing require specific processes and systems to ensure production adhere to design
specifications. Outsourcing should have agents that have adequate knowledge of market factors
such as regulatory standards, management practices and cultural norms for easy alignment of
products. Quality control is an essential phase of product development. Companies should
develop their quality control systems to inspect and conduct quality checks to reduce instants of
product recalls. This ensures a proper linkage of distribution and sales. This process between
design and manufacturing provide diverse opportunities for slippages. Companies can reduce
MANAGING RECALLS AND SLIPPAGES 7
these mistakes by establishing third-party or create its monitoring systems as well as increase
inspections. Organizational systems will ensure final product integrity and making it safe for use.
It is essential to comprehend the manufacturing context of suppliers in order to redesign products
that are less hazardous.
3.0. Most Important
The design step is the most crucial stage. Companies should ensure that products
are manufactured according to tested design that ensures quality, safety, and excitement to
consumers. The consumer product safety should communicate the instructions associated with
assembling and usage of the product. Product design and safety ensures that companies meet
consumer expectations and ensure safety with simple instruction for using products Bapuji
Companies should prevent recalls through better knowledge management and
ensures that product design and manufacturing meet consumer expectations, safety, and quality
standards. Companies should adequately communicate instructions to users and ensure proper
quality control and monitoring of all phases of product production. In this way, it will be easier
to establish slippages that companies can maximize to prevent product recalls.
